It is conceivable that certain people, who appear to have in mind something which may be superficially game-like, could assemble something far more profound than they initially intended: a launch-vehicle that provides us not with a dogmatic template of who or what to be, but instead encourages the most diverse and creative expressions of who we may become — together. It would not be the first time that those 'in the know' were entirely mislead due to their habitual comparisons, nor would it be the first time that a well-assembled 'situation' blossomed into something previously unexpectable...

More action is needed, and not just from designers. Whether we are preoccupied with the ourselves, all the varied processes of life, entertainment (tv, gaming, facebook, twitter, and the like), or trying to keep our head and the heads of our families above water, we all possess a certain nonchalance (a great word for it) for the plight of others. And to a small degree, that is necessary to get through each day. The older I get, the more convinced I am the compassion and mercy for those less fortunate than myself is the greatest challenge in life. We cannot leave it up to someone else or the government. It starts with me and you. Living personally responsible lives is the best way we can improve our circumstances and increase our ability to help others.

Thank you for this post, Eric. I really appreciate your message and share a lot of your sentiments. While work like EPWA can be thought of as doing what is within our means as artists to address issues of social or political concerns or making visual and therefore raising awareness about an issue otherwise ignored, I am often frustrated by the limitations of this. And concerned about artists and designers who believe that their work does more to effect sustainable change than it may actually do. I was recently asked how I see the relationship between my art practice and activism and was surprised myself when I answered by saying that the two areas of my life feel very separate. While I am also interested in work that engages in the public realm I find myself always questioning if it goes far enough. (This reminds me of a comment made on my post "Public Art and Redevelopment" which responded to the fight against redevelopment and ended with a somewhat frustrated or defeated sentence: Sometimes as artists we can feel so little.) It seems important to function in both realms, like you say; to interpret, deal with, and communicate through artistic practices while also stepping outside that to address and effect change in a different form. Maybe this is a way of combating the feelings of being "small."

It also occurred to me that your post was primarily about design and printed matter and I'm wondering how this question also functions with public art or more social practice based projects that interact directly with a public audience in various locations and communities.
