Not everybody is able or willing to engage in mass social/political protests. Those who consider themselves agents of change, revolutionaries, activists, etc. must learn to accept people as and where they are and not apply rigid, purist definitions that tend to eliminate the overwhelming majority of people as participants in any revolution. If we are to successfully bring about change, we must unite all who can be united. Labeling honest and sincere people who are trying to bring about change in their own way, defeats that purpose.

Hi Matt, thanks for your comments. Like I mentioned in the blog it is my hope that the garden is one form of protest and doesn't replace engagement in other broader political movements or campaigns - I think it's important not to stop there or with any socially relevant artistic project for that matter. Also once a lot of produce is generated FARM plans on donating half to the SF Food Bank while allowing the rest to be used by the students or others in the area as they wish.

I think a lot of designers/ artists are quite diluted about how much their work affects the real world. I honestly feel it's a cop out to build a miniscule garden and say that's your form of "protest" without having engaged in any social or political action. The only people who will interface with this are other CCA artists, which comes off as self-serving to me.
