Great interview. In response to "Arcosanti Resident", you are allowed to maintain that your community is not a 'utopia', but for outsiders it is a utopian community by definition: a community with a purpose (didactic, at that) that goes beyond merely housing people united by a common geography, language, or history.

Arcosanti is not utopian nor is it a commune. Founder Paolo Soleri would cringe at the word "utopia" because it is not realistic. Arcosanti's goal is to address real problems with real, possible ideas for solutions. Also, by definition, it is not a commune or even an intentional community. It is an educational project; people from all over the world come to visit, for a day, week, month, or become residents and stay longer. The goal is to test and demonstrate arcology, the fusion of architecture and ecology in order to reduce human impact on the environment (natural resources) while also improving quality of life. Arcosanti residents live their own private, diverse lifestyles. The general idea of arcology could benefit people from all over the world, not just in the Southwestern U.S. Arcosanti is simply a prototype in progress for arcology, working out the kinks through time and building.
